What is the reason we get excited about pre-season testing, MotoGP or Superbike that is?
No well-founded reason, other than that craving for news and clicks post-fasting, in which one is mad to make situations out of news, if not, unfortunately, inventing them in the first place... and news.
Eventually the tests come and you have to get excited. It serves the wallet. And it obviously finds fertile ground in the phytos.
But believe me, though, with all the variables there is little to get excited about.
But let's see them, the variables.
Temperature
It is difficult to test at a track with the same temperature in which you will run when the time set by the calendar comes.
It does not change much, you will say. Wrong.
At tracks like Jerez, coincidentally a habitual testing destination, a few hours make a difference. In the sameend pilots with pole have then bitten the dust. And we're talking hours. Imagine when we're talking months. Jerez is a striking example, but things change little in the rest of the cases as well.
Presence
If someone is missing in a test session, how do you concretely measure the value of who is there?
But then imagine you were an official house (it's different for individuals). Which tests would you skip? The ones you need or the ones where you go fast?
So it is easy to assume that those who are not there are because MEDIALLY, net of economic hardship, they do not need them. And so those who are there have little to ruffle feathers.
Configurations and stuff to test
Everyone in the test has his own schedule. That means he is building. If someone is building, they are obviously not doing speed tests or time research. So time doesn't count.
At least not to those who are watching and don't know what's going on.
Time that isn't there
How many times have you read about phantasmagoric times, just in case, without stopwatches or transponders? There are a couple of sites that specialize in this kind of news.
A team that has the time, do you really think they are hiding it?
Do you really think the level of secrecy of information is military?
Those who run without transponders and without chrono are because they are not valuing it. No one in their right mind would give up taking and storing references when they are good.
Miscellaneous
Are the items listed above enough for you?
There are others. Pilots not yet in place, material not yet fully arrived, ergonomics, configurations still being studied, and a whole host of elements that makes it possible to classify test results mostly as useless.
But how useless? Are the useless tests being done?
The truth is that to know if someone has found something, you need to be informed about what they were looking for.
And so the tests are useful, but only to those who do them (pilots, insiders, etc.) They are not useful to those who stand there watching them trying to figure something out.
In fact, if we must say so, they serve the people who tell them, to make fans dream, sponsors lick their whiskers, and a whole series of fuffy activities that in reality have little content for the most part. But they do serve for clicks.
Not to mention a well-known German house that every year in the pre-season stage seems to be able to impress but then is more and more miserably far from the results that count.
There the problem is different. Editorial creativity is about earning a few banners or some form of goodwill.
In short, those who do the tests and those who tell the public what they want to hear gain with the tests. Those who read, on the other hand, continue to stay, confused and happy.
